Airfield
RAF Kenley was one of the three RAF stations specifically tasked with the defence of London during the Battle of Britain, suffering devastating attacks in August 1940. Widely regarded as the most complete Battle of Britain-era fighter station surviving in original configuration.
Royal Air Force Kenley, located near Kenley on the edge of Greater London, was a frontline RAF fighter station from 1917 to 1959. During the Battle of Britain in 1940, it was one of three stations specifically assigned to the air defence of London — alongside Biggin Hill and Croydon — playing a central role in some of the fiercest combat of the campaign.
The station suffered its most devastating attack on 18 August 1940, one of the costliest days of the Battle. German raids destroyed two of the three surviving hangars, ten aircraft, and heavily cratered the runways. Despite this, Kenley continued operations and was identified by English Heritage in 2000 as "the most complete fighter airfield associated with the Battle of Britain to have survived."
The airfield was retained by the Ministry of Defence after the RAF departed in 1959, continuing as a gliding site operated by No. 615 Volunteer Gliding Squadron. In 2006, the airfield site was designated a conservation area by Croydon and Tandridge councils. Though the control tower and remaining hangar were lost to fire in 1978, the runway and perimeter track survive in their original 1939-40 configuration — a remarkable degree of preservation for a Battle of Britain station.
